An angel of the Lord (Gabriel) appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar where the incense was burnt. When Zechariah saw him he was alarmed and felt afraid. But the angel said to him, "Dont be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son. You are to name him John. How glad and happy you will be, and how happy many others will be when he is born! He will be a great man in the Lord's sight. He must not drink any wine or strong drink. From his very birth he will be filled with the Holy spirit, and he will bring back many of the people of israel to the Lord their God. He will go ahead of the Lord, strong and mighty like the prophet Elijah. He will bring fathers and children together again; he will turn disobedient people back to the way of thinking of the righteous; he will get Lord's people ready for him."
Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know if this is so? I am an old man, and my wife is old also."
"I AM GABRIEL," THE ANGEL ANSWERED. "I STAND IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD, WHO SENT TO SPEAK TO YOU TO TELL YOU THIS GOOD NEWS. But you have not believed my message, which will come true at the right time. Because you have not believed, you will be unable to speak; you will remain silent until the day my promise to you comes true."

ALLAH ALMIGHTY SAYS:
This is a mention of the Mercy of your Lord to His slave Zachariah.
When he called out his Lord, ALLAH- a call in secret.
Saying: "My Lord! Indeed my bones have grown feeble, and grey hair has spread on my head, and I have never been unblest in my invocation to You, O My Lord!
"And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from yourself an heir, -
"Who shall inherit me, and inherit also the posterity of Jacob (Prophethood) And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are well-pleased!".
Allah said: "O Zachariah! Verily, We give you glad tidings of a son, His name will be John (Yahya). We have given that name to none before him."
He said: My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age."
He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have cteated you before, when you had been nothing!"
Zachariah said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect."
Then he came out to his people from praying place, he told them by signs to glorify ALLAH'S PRAISE in the morning and in the afternoon.
(It was said to his son): "O John! Hold fast the Scripture (The Torah)." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child.
And made him sympathetic to men as a mercy from Us, and pure from sins and he was righteous, and dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient to Allah.
And peace on him the day he was born, the he dies, and the day he will be raised up to life again!
Say ( O Muhammad): "Whoever is an enemy to GABRIEL (let him die in his fury), FOR INDEED HE HAS BROUGHT IT (THIS QUR'AN) DOWN TO YOUR HEART BY ALLAH'S PERMISSION, CONFIRMING WHAT CAME BEFORE IT (i.e. THE TORAH AND GOSPEL) AND GUIDANCE AND GLAD TIDINGS FOR THE BELIEVERS.
AND INDEED WE HAVE SENT DOWN TO YOU (O MUHAMMAD) MANIFEST VERSES, AND NONE DISBELIEVE IN THEM BUT THOSE WHO REBEL AGAINST ALLAH'S COMMAND.
And they say: Allah has begotten a son. Glory be to Him (Exalted be He above all that they associate with Him). Nay, TO HIM BELONGS ALL THAT IS IN THE HEAVENS AND ON EARTH, AND ALL SURRENDER WITH OBEDIENCE TO HIM.
THE ORIGINATOR OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH. WHEN HE DECREES A MATTER, HE ONLY SAYS TO IT: "BE!" - AND IT IS.
