Hebrew Movement

The United States of American is being divided in two by design. Take your pick: Race, Ethnicity, Social Status, Political Views, and for many other reasons. This is plain to see. And as many know, “A house divided cannot stand” - Yahusha Marqos (Mark) 3:25.

Never the less, and more importantly, there is a deep divide with the body of messiah (the believers and Yahusha).

It’s an important issues in which many find themselves on one side or the other and once again this is by design. But this division is from Elohim (the Most High) as you will soon see.

This topic may be completely new to you as possibly a friend or family member has shared this with you to help you better understand. It doesn’t matter how you got here to this post...

IT’S FOR A REASON!!!!

Today, you will see why many of us have been called out of mainstream “christianity” and “church” and it’s traditions and have decided to truly follow or savior the Way Scriptures tells us too.

We have a true desire to follow our Father’s eternal laws, precepts, set-apart days, and commandments. His instructions for life, the Torah.

While some may think this is going backwards, we couldn’t disagree more. This will be explained quickly, and not by lecture or fancy wording, but by the authority of His Living Word.

We have been labeled as “The Hebrew Roots Movement”, “Torah Observant”,  “Sacred Namers”, “Pharisees”, “Heretics”, “Legalistic”, and much more. All to which we turn the other cheek... MattithYahu (Matthew) 5:39.

We are simply doing our best to be followers of the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Yahusha Ha’Mashiach (the Messiah).

Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 2:6
“The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked.”

Please keep in mind, the information today will be barely scratching the surface of the innumerable amount of evidence, but in an attempt to keep this short we will just cover some of the basics.

THE LAW OF YAHUAH IS FREEDOM

Tehillim (Psalms) 19:7-11
7 The Torah of יהוה (Yahuah) is perfect, bringing back the being; The witness of יהוה (Yahuah) is trustworthy, making wise the simple;
8 The orders of יהוה (Yahuah) are straight, rejoicing the heart; The command of יהוה (Yahuah) is clear, enlightening the eyes;
9 The fear of יהוה (Yahuah) is clean, standing forever; The right-rulings of יהוה (Yahuah) are true, They are righteous altogether,
10 More desirable than gold, Than much fine gold; And sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
11 Also, Your servant is warned by them, In guarding them there is great reward.

Tehillim (Psalms) 119:44:-45
44 That I might guard Your Torah continually, Forever and ever;
45 That I might walk in a broad place, For I have sought Your orders;

Romiyim (Romans) 7:12
“So that the Torah truly is set-apart, and the command set-apart, and righteous, and good.”

Romiyim (Romans) 7:14
“For we know that the Torah is Spiritual”

Ya‛aqoḇ (James) 1:25
“But he that looked into the perfect Torah, that of freedom, and continues in it, not becoming a hearer that forgets, but a doer of work, this one shall be blessed in his doing of the Torah.”

IS THE TORAH BURDENSOME OR BONDAGE?

Some will tell you that the Torah is bondage or burdensome mostly due to something Sha’ul (Paul) wrote in Galatiyim (Galatians) 5.

Galatiyim (Galatians) 5:1
“In the freedom with which Messiah has made us free, stand firm, then, and do not again be held with a yoke of slavery.”

Bible Colleges and Seminaries alike teach that this freedom was from the Torah and that the bondage is the Torah. Yet we can’t find any Scriptures that backs this.

I find it very interesting that the chapter prior Sha’ul (Paul) states what this bondage was.

Galatiyim (Galatians) 4:3
“So we also, when we were children, were under the elementary matters of the world, being enslaved.”

Is the Torah “elementary matters of the world”?

Just a bit further into chapter 4 we also see this.

Galatiyim (Galatians) 4:9
“But now after you have known Elohim, or rather are known by Elohim, how do you turn again to the weak and poor elementary matters, to which you wish to be enslaved again?”

I humbly ask you, as Sha’ul (Paul) was designated to bring the Besorah (gospel) to the Gentiles, or non-believers if you will, how is it possible that these men and women would be returning to the Torah if they never had it in the first place?

It’s nonsense, yet this is taught as fact this very day.

YAHUSHA: HIS YOKE IS GENTLE AND HIS BURDEN IS LIGHT

MattithYahu (Matthew) 11:30
“For My yoke is gentle and My burden is light.”

It could seem that the Torah is burdensome if you have a love for the world and the things contained in it, but most have no idea that Yahusha is referring Deḇarim (Deuteronomy) 30.

Deḇarim (Deuteronomy) 30:10-14
10 if you obey the voice of יהוה (Yahuah) your Elohim, to guard His commands and His laws which are written in this Book of the Torah, if you turn back to יהוה (Yahuah) your Elohim with all your heart and with all your being.
11 For this command which I am commanding you today, it is not too hard for you, nor is it far off.
12 It is not in the heavens, to say, ‘Who shall ascend into the heavens for us, and bring it to us, and cause us to hear it, so that we do it?’
13 Nor is it beyond the sea, to say, ‘Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it to us, and cause us to hear it, so that we do it?”
14 For the Word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart – to do it.

LOVE IS FULFILLING THE TORAH

Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 5:3
“For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands, and His commands are not heavy.”

Tehillim (Psalms) 1:1-3
1 Blessed is the man who shall not walk in the counsel of the wrong, And shall not stand in the path of sinners, And shall not sit in the seat of scoffers,
2 But his delight is in the Torah of יהוה (Yahuah), And he meditates in His Torah day and night.
3 For he shall be as a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That yields its fruit in its season, And whose leaf does not wither, And whatever he does prospers.

YAHUSHA HAD ONLY TWO COMMANDMENTS?

MattithYahu (Matthew) 22:37-40
37 And יהושע (Yahusha) said to him, " ‘You shall love יהוה (Yahuah) your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and great command.
39 And the second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
40 On these two commands hang all the Torah and the Prophets.

My question to you, does HANG mean to replace or substitute? Not at all. When we look at what Yahusha said in MattithYahu (Matthew) 22 it’s clear that He was saying that the entire Torah can be kept by following on these two things, love Elohim and love others. When we look at the 10 Commandments the first 4 are about loving Yahuah and the next 6 are about loving others.

In my humble opinion we are seeing a division that Yahuah our Father, our Creator Himself is conducting. The WISE and the FOOLISH.

Remember what our Savior Yahusha Himself said,
MattithYahu (Matthew) 5:17-19
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to complete.
18 For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one yod or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.
19 Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.”

Luqas (Luke) 12:51
“Do you think that I came to give peace on earth? I say to you, no, but rather division.”

There is a day coming when separation happens and the door is shut. This is the door to Renew Yerushalayim (New Jerusalem) and the millennial reign and not all make it in as we learn in the parable of the King, the wedding, and the guest. From that parable Yahusha said,
MattithYahu (Matthew) 22:14
“For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Some of you may be saying to yourself, “What about the verse in Romiyim (Romans) 10:13 and Yo’ĕl (Joel) 2:32 that say to call on His Name to be saved?

The Kingdom of Yahuah is coming soon and everyone who calls on the Name of Yahuah because of His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach will be saved from the second death. HalaluYah!  But the resurrection of the dead doesn’t happen until after the Tribulation. We will be gathered from all corners of the earth. This is the same event the Sha’ul (Paul) spoke of in Tas`loniqim Aleph (1 Thessalonians) 4.

THE GATHERING

Yehezqĕl (Ezekiel) 20:33-36
33 “As I live,” declares the Master יהוה (Yahuah), “do not I, with a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out, reign over you?
34 And I shall bring you out from the peoples and gather you out of the lands where you are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with wrath poured out.
35 And I shall bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and shall enter into judgment with you face to face there.
36 As I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Mitsrayim (Egypt), so I shall enter into judgment with you,” declares the Master יהוה (Yahuah).
37 And I shall make you pass under the rod, and shall bring you into the bond of the covenant,
38 and purge the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against Me. From the land where they sojourn I bring them out, but they shall not come into the land of Yisra’ĕl. And you shall know that I am יהוה (Yahuah).

So we see that all are gathered but not all enter. Did Yahusha say the same, Yes!

THE WISE AND THE FOOLISH

MattithYahu (Matthew) 25:1-
1 Then the reign of the heavens shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five foolish.
3 Those who were foolish, having taken their lamps, took no oil with them,
4 but the wise took oil in their containers with their lamps.
5 Now while the bridegroom took time, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight a cry was heard, ‘See, the bridegroom is coming, go out to meet him!’
7 Then all those maidens rose up and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’
9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, indeed, there would not be enough for us and you. Instead, go to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut.
11 And later the other maidens also came, saying, ‘Master, Master, open up for us!’
12 But he answering, said, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

Who wants to hear that? What was the difference between the wise and the foolish?

Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 6:23
“For the command is a lamp, And the Torah a light, And reproofs of discipline a way of life,”

Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 10:8
“The wise in heart accepts commands, But one with foolish lips falls.”

Tehillim 19:7
“The Torah of יהוה (Yahuah) is perfect, bringing back the being; The witness of יהוה (Yahuah) is trustworthy, making wise the simple;”

Again, we see that door being shut.

Ḥazon (Revelation) 22:14
“Blessed are those doing His commands, so that the authority shall be theirs unto the tree of life, and to enter through the gates into the city.”

Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 2:3-4
3 And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands.
4 The one who says, “I know Him,” and does not guard His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Remember what we just read in the parable of the wise and the foolish and He said, “Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.” You will see the same in MattithYahu (Matthew) 7 and it clarifies what was missing.

MattithYahu (Matthew) 7:22-23
22 Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’
23 And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’

Continuing on in verse 24-27

24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does them, shall be like a wise man who built his house on the rock,
25 and the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not do them, shall be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand,
27 and the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat on that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.

Have you decided to follow Yahusha Words and be likened to a wise man? Or you can listen to the doctrines of men that say the Torah was done away with when He died and that they are for the “Jews” only.

It’s up to you to decide.

Galatiyim (Galatians) 3:28-29
28 There is not Yahuḏi nor Greek (Gentile), there is not slave nor free, there is not male and female, for you are all one in Messiah יהושע (Yahusha).
29 And if you are of Messiah, then you are seed of Aḇraham, and heirs according to promise.

Here’s another confirming witness from 2 Esdras, and keep in mind this book was included in the 1611 KJV, the 1520 and 1599 Geneva Bibles, and was only removed as Scripture in 1881.

2 Esdras 15:24-26
24 Woe to them that sin, and keep not my commandments! saith Yahuah.
25 I will not spare them: go your way, ye children, from the power, defile not my sanctuary.
26 For Yahuah knoweth all them that sin against him, and therefore delivereth he them unto death and destruction.
27 For now are the plagues come upon the whole earth and ye shall remain in them: for Elohim shall not deliver you, because ye have sinned against him.

IS THIS A “WORKS BASED” SALVATION?

Please realize that not one of us say that you must keep the Torah to be saved but per our Messiah in Many Scriptural passage, not all will enter into the Kingdom, and not all will rule and reign with Him during the thousand year reign.

Ḥazon (Revelation) 2:26-29
26 And he who overcomes, and guards My works until the end, to him I shall give authority over the nations,
27 and he shall shepherd them with a rod of iron, as the potter’s vessels shall be broken to pieces, as I also have received from My Father.
28 And I shall give him the morning star.
29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

Remember, Kĕpha (Peter) warned us that many would use Sha’ul ‘s (Paul’s) words incorrectly and it seem especially rapid these days because most don’t even know the Scriptures.

KEPHA’S (PETER’S) WARNING

Kĕpha Bĕt (2 Peter) 3:14-17
14 So then, beloved ones, looking forward to this, do your utmost to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,
15 and reckon the patience of our Master as deliverance, as also our beloved brother Sha’ul (Paul) wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him,
16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them concerning these matters, in which some are hard to understand, which those who are untaught and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do also the other Scriptures.
17 You, then, beloved ones, being forewarned, watch, lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the delusion of the lawless,

WHAT ABOUT MA`ASEI (ACTS) 15?

Many sight Ma`asei (Acts) 15 as a foundation for a doctrine of casting away the Torah. Please release that the Apostle’s had to start somewhere with new converts. Just like today if we witness to an unbeliever to T’Shuva (repent) and believe the Besorah (gospel) of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, do we tell them they must do everything at once, or would they learn as they continued in belief and as the Ruach Ha’Qodesh (Set-Apart Spirit) guides them?

This is the same situation and as we see here and in verse 19-21 it confirms that the new converts would hear the message weakly about the Torah during the Shabbat (Sabbath) and continued to grow.

Ma`asei (Acts) 15:19-21
19 Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the nations who are turning to Elohim,
20 but that we write to them to abstain from the defilements of idols, and from whoring, and from what is strangled, and from blood.
21 For from ancient generations Mosheh (Moses) has, in every city, those proclaiming him – being read in the congregations every Sabbath.

The Apostle’s had to start somewhere.

ARE YOU SAYING WE ARE TO BE PERFECT?

I can’t speak for all who observe and preach Torah, but I am far from perfect and know that perfection has been found in Yahusha alone. But, does that mean we don’t strive for it? No, that would be against the teachings of Yahusha.

Luqas (Luke) 13:24
“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, because many, I say to you, shall seek to enter in and shall not be able.”

Iḇ`rim (Hebrews) 12:1
We too, then, having so great a cloud of witnesses all around us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race set before us,

Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) 9:10
10 All that your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom in She’ol (the grave) where you are going.

ROMIYIM (ROMANS) 12 THE LIVING SACRIFICE

Romiyim 12:1-2
1 I call upon you, therefore, brothers, through the compassion of Elohim, to present your bodies a living offering – set-apart, well-pleasing to Elohim – your reasonable worship.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you prove what is that good and well-pleasing and perfect desire of Elohim.

He deserves every once of effort from us.

“WHEN YOU SIN YAHUAH ONLY SEES YAHUSHA” - DOCTRINE OF MEN AKA PHARISEES

Many of us are waking up and breaking free from the teachings of the real Pharisees, as we are normally labeled, that preach man made translations that contradict the True teachings of Yahusha.

Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 2:1-6
1 My little children, I write this to you, so that you do not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Intercessor with the Father, יהושע (Yahusha) Messiah, a righteous One.
2 And He Himself is an atoning offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for all the world.
3 And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands.
4 The one who says, “I know Him,” and does not guard His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of Elohim has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
6 The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked.

WHAT IS SIN?

Yoḥanan Aleph (1 John) 3:4
“Everyone doing sin also does lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.”

Listen, we know, none of us can keep it perfect. We completely understand and agree.

Eph`siyim (Ephesians) 2:8-9
8 For by favour you have been saved, through belief, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of Elohim,
9 it is not by works, so that no one should boast.

Romiyim (Romans) 3:31
“Do we then nullify the Torah through the belief? Let it not be! On the contrary, we establish the Torah.”

THE STRONG DELUSION

Tas`loniqim Bĕt (2 Thessalonians) 2:7-12
7 For the secret of lawlessness is already at work – only until he who now restrains comes out of the midst.
8 And then the lawless one shall be revealed, whom the Master shall consume with the Spirit of His mouth and bring to naught with the manifestation of His coming.
9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power and signs and wonders of falsehood,
10 and with all deceit of unrighteousness in those perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth, in order for them to be saved.
11 And for this reason Elohim sends them a working of delusion, for them to believe the falsehood,
12 in order that all should be judged who did not believe the truth, but have delighted in the unrighteousness.

The Scriptures define the Truth in two ways

Yoḥanan (John) 14:6
(Yahusha) יהושע said to him, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Tehillim 119:142
Your righteousness is righteousness forever, And Your Torah is truth.

Since Yahusha is the whole Word, He is both definitions.

Yoḥanan (John) 1:14
“And the Word became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we saw His esteem, esteem as of an only brought-forth of a Father, complete in favour and truth.”

So we believe it is time to follow the whole Word.

DROPPING THE WORLD’S PAGAN HOLIDAYS FOR YAHUAH’S SET-APART FEAST

This would be way to long to explain each pagan holiday that has been mingled into “christianity” and the world. You can research in your own time the origin of “christmas”, “easter”, and others. This part is tough as most of us grew up as kids loving these days, unfortunately, not only are they unscriptural, but in direct opposition and a slap in the face to Yahuah.

Many of us are casting away these pagan days in favor of the seven Scriptural Set-Apart days of our Creator. Which are not “Jewish holiday’s” as we commonly hear, but are Yahuah’s Appointed Times.

Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 23:1-4
1 And יהוה (Yahuah) spoke to Mosheh (Moses), saying,
2 Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘The appointed times of יהוה (Yahuah), which you are to proclaim as set-apart gatherings, My appointed times, are these:
3 ‘Six days work is done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a set-apart gathering. You do no work, it is a Sabbath to יהוה (Yahuah) in all your dwellings.
4 ‘These are the appointed times of יהוה (Yahuah), set-apart gatherings which you are to proclaim at their appointed times.

You can read more about these appointed time in the rest of Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 23.

Bemiḏbar (Numbers) 15:15-16
15 One law is for you of the assembly and for the stranger who sojourns with you – a law forever throughout your generations. As you are, so is the stranger before יהוה (Yahuah).
16 One Torah and one right-ruling is for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you.

Even with that said most have no idea they can be grafted into the House of Yisra’ĕl. We are taught that there is a separation between the Gentiles and Yisra’ĕl, especially with the confusion surrounding the 1948 “State of Israel” and the “Jews” living there. These two set of Scripture is barely touching this topic, but the true Yisra’ĕl is not a “State” but His chosen people, those who are His Children, us, who believe in Yahusha and call on Yahuah.

Galatiyim (Galatians) 3:26-29
26 For you are all sons of Elohim through belief in Messiah יהושע (Yahusha).
27 For as many of you as were immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah.
28 There is not Yahuḏi nor Greek (Gentile), there is not slave nor free, there is not male and female, for you are all one in Messiah יהושע (Yahusha).
29 And if you are of Messiah, then you are seed of Aḇraham, and heirs according to promise. (The Children of Yisra’ĕl)

Eph`siyim (Ephesians) 2:11-19
11 Therefore remember that you, once nations in the flesh, who are called ‘the uncircumcision’ by what is called ‘the circumcision’ made in the flesh by hands,
12 that at that time you were without Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Yisra’ĕl and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no expectation and without Elohim in the world.
13 But now in Messiah יהושע (Yahusha) you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah.
14 For He is our peace, who has made both one, and having broken down the partition of the barrier,
15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity – the torah of the commands in dogma – so as to create in Himself one renewed man from the two, thus making peace,
16 and to completely restore to favour both of them unto Elohim in one body through the stake, having destroyed the enmity by it.
17 And having come, He brought as Good News peace to you who were far off, and peace to those near.
18 Because through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens of the set-apart ones and members of the household of Elohim. (The House of Yisra’ĕl)

Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 1:5
“The wise one hears and increases learning, And the understanding one gets wise counsel,”

Mishlĕ (Proverbs) 1:7
“The fear of יהוה (Yahuah) is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) 12:13
“Let us hear the conclusion of the entire matter: Fear Elohim and guard His commands, for this applies to all mankind!”

Acts 20

HAVDALAH IN ACTS 20

On Saturday evening many Jewish homes perform a ceremony known as "Havdalah." The word Havdalah means "separation" or "division." During the ceremony a special candle will be lit and blessings are said. The purpose of Havdalah is to close the Sabbath for the purpose of separating it from the rest of the week. It is believed that a form of Havdalah was first instituted around the fourth century BC by the Men of the Great Assembly.

It is very likely that the events of Acts 21:7-11 took place on a Saturday night as the disciples were gathering together for fellowship for the close of the Sabbath. Below are three reasons from the Biblical text that point to this being a Havdalah like, Saturday night, gathering.

1. Acts 20:7 says that they gathered on the first day of the week.

"Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight."

Although this could mean a Sunday morning or afternoon, a Biblical day starts in the evening (Gen.1:5,8,13,19,23,31), meaning that the first day of the week starts on Saturday night according to God's calendar. It is also important to note that the word "day" was added and is not in the original text. The verse actually reads "they gathered on the first of the week."

2. Acts 20:8 says that there were many lights in the room.

"There were many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered together."

This would seem to indicate that they were meeting at night. It would make no sense to tell us there were lights in the room if they were meeting in the middle of the day.

3. Acts 20:7-9 tells us that a man fell asleep at midnight. If this was a Sunday morning gathering, this would mean that Paul preached for at least 12 hours. Highly unlikely!

Beloved ones, there is no such thing as a wrong day to worship God. The early Church met every day of the week (Acts 2:46) -- including Sunday. However, this passage does not teach that God changed the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day. The events of Acts 20:7-11 were extremely likely to have occurred during a Saturday night gathering known today as Havdalah. Even if this was a Sunday morning, the text just says they were gathered together on that day, it never says that they considered it the new Sabbath. - by Shon Cunningham

Over the past month, thousands of indigenous West Papuans have been displaced, fleeing air strikes and hiding in the highland jungle without food and water or access to health-care or shelter. According to local reports a mother and child have died, and three other children have died of starvation. The Indonesian military is suspected to have used the chemical weapon white phosphorus, banned under international law, in West Papua. According to reports at least four villages have been attacked from the air, from artillery, and by ground troops. The Indonesian army has sealed off the area. Church and local government officials cannot access the area to investigate or help those displaced. Major military and police operations have been launched by Indonesia in the Nduga Regency of West Papua. West Papuan representative groups are calling the situation a ‘humanitarian crisis’. According to the International Coalition for Papua, an alliance of over 15 human rights, church, and monitoring groups, at least 20 civilians have been killed in the operations so far. Ground troops have been sent into local villages with air support strafing civilian areas. According to eyewitness reports gathered by the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), the umbrella organization for mass Papuan independence groups, church and school activities in all 32 districts of the Nduga Regency have been completely shut down. The ULMWP lists the following human rights abuses during the Indonesian military operation in Nduga: 6 people shot dead by the Indonesian military; 3 in critical condition from gunshot wounds; 2 badly burned from bombs and grenades; 5 missing; 4 detained and tortured; Congregations from 34 churches still on the run and in hiding due to continuous military operations; Thousands of people displaced and hiding in the surrounding jungle. The ULMWP has called for an immediate cessation of Indonesian military and police operations and for the Indonesian government to allow humanitarian agencies and human rights monitors to enter the region. For decades the Indonesian government has operated tight restrictions on journalists and NGOs seeking to enter West Papua. In a statement released today ULMWP Chairman Benny Wenda said: "Indonesia is violating international law. The use of chemical burn-causing weapons is illegal. Indonesia flouts these treaties in its acts of extreme violence. When chemical weapons are used in Syria the world is horrified, but in West Papua the Indonesian government is able to cover up its crimes by stopping any independent organizations from entering the country and then launch brutal military operations afterwards. This episode is more evidence of the desperate need for West Papua to have freedom from the colonial occupation of the Indonesian state. "Without urgent action by international humanitarian, aid and human rights organisations, more Papuan civilians will be at risk. International observers and the West Papua people are lobbying for urgent access to West Papua to provide immediate medical treatment, food aid, medical support, documentation and resources to villagers; and to investigate the illegal use of chemical weapons," Wenda said. An Altar of Earth

Like   Tweet   Pin   +1     "An altar of earth you shall make for Me" (Exodus 20:21) Shvat 19, 5779/January 25, 2019 Following Israel's extraordinary one heart, one voice paean to G-d at the crossing of the Sea of Reeds, it's only natural that G-d should reciprocate with the greatest gift He could bequeath to his beloved people: the gift of Torah. The love-fest of the giving and receiving of Torah at Mount Sinai remains unparalleled in the annals of human history. The people arrived at Sinai as one, as described by the verse, "Israel encamped there [Mount Sinai] opposite the mountain." (Exodus 19:2) The Hebrew word for encamped, vayichan, is written (ungrammatically) in the singular, emphasizing the unity which bonded the entire nation as one: one people, one heart. But why? Why were the people so upbeat? Understandably, following Israel’s miraculous crossing of the Sea of Reeds Israel experienced an emotional high. But soon they were to discover that life in the desert was not going to be easy. Israel quickly despaired when faced with the threat of thirst and starvation, and despite G-d's providing of food and drink for them, Israel remained bitter and disgruntled, even expressing regret that they had ever left the "fleshpots" of Egypt. (ibid 15:3) Life in Egypt, under the thumb of Pharaoh, was miserable, but at least it was secure. Life in the desert was uncertain and terrifying. And despite Israel's ultimate victory over Amalek, his unexpected, unprovoked and undeserved attack must surely have disheartened the infant nation. Still licking their wounds, Israel arrived, at last, at Sinai, where they could enjoy a moment's respite from their travails. But the unity that Israel experienced upon arriving and encamping at Sinai was born from more than just a sense of relief. Israel's unity was born of a feeling of expectation, of anticipation. But what were the children of Israel anticipating? G-d had not informed Moshe in advance of His intention to appear before and speak directly to the entire nation of Israel at Sinai, transmitting to them the word of Torah. What was the excitement about? What was Israel looking forward to? When G-d first revealed to Moshe His plan to deliver Israel from Egypt, He told Moshe to gather up the elders of Israel and to go to Pharaoh, telling Pharaoh, "HaShem, G-d of the Hebrews has happened upon us, and now, let us go for a three days' journey in the desert and make offerings to HaShem, our G-d." (ibid 3:18) This original planned rendezvous, later detailed as a three day festival in the desert during which Israel would make offerings to HaShem, was what first captured the imagination and the hearts of Israel, while they were still suffering under the burden of slavery. This planned three day outing is what sparked hope in the children of Israel and maintained their spirits throughout the ten plagues which G-d brought upon Egypt. With every new plague Moshe repeated G-d's message to Pharaoh: "Let My people go that they may serve Me." Every time that Pharaoh heard that message, the children of Israel also heard it. It kindled in them a long forgotten memory. Not a personal memory, but a national memory of a time when their forefathers, Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov freely erected altars and made offerings to the G-d who had taken them under His protective wing. When Moshe instructed the people to prepare lambs for an offering, it wasn't out of nowhere. The desire to serve G-d, to reach up to G-d via the time honored tradition of presenting G-d with an offering of the heart, had reawakened in the people a long oppressed and dormant desire to draw close to G-d and to live life every day in the presence of G-d. When Israel arrived at last at the foot of Mount Sinai, she understood in her heart that the long awaited time had come. The long awaited "three days' journey in the desert," that is, three days of making offerings to HaShem, were about to commence. The three days which Moshe told in unmistakable detail in his final warning to Pharaoh, that "With our youth and with our elders we will go, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our cattle we will go, for it is a festival of HaShem to us," (ibid 10:9) were about to begin. The people were ready! What Israel didn't anticipate, and couldn't have known, was that the "three days' journey" was going to be translated into three days of purification and preparation for the receiving of Torah. Knowing full well that the people's hearts were as one, open and ready, willing, and full with excitement, G-d told Moshe to open the holy convocation with these words: "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and I brought you to Me. And now, if you obey Me and keep My covenant, you shall be to Me a treasure out of all peoples, for Mine is the entire earth. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of princes and a holy nation," to which the nation joyfully responded in unison, saying, "All that HaShem has spoken we shall do!" (ibid 19:4-6,8) And so immediately following the reading of the wedding vows, which, in reality, is what the giving of Torah at Sinai truly was, for it wed Israel and G-d together forever, G-d had one more surprise in store for Israel: "An altar of earth you shall make for Me, and you shall slaughter beside it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. Wherever I allow My name to be mentioned, I will come to you and bless you." (ibid 20:21) Actually, not a surprise at all. The long awaited three day tryst with G-d that Israel had been anxiously anticipating since G-d first sent Moshe to Pharaoh with the message "Let My people go," was about to commence. The only difference being that Israel's three day rendezvous with G-d was not going to be for three days only. Israel's life with G-d would be forever!
